What is Pilates?

There are many forms of exercise for the human body. Some examples are resistance training, running, swimming, martial arts, aerobics, and yoga. These types of exercises are all unique and when done correctly contribute to different aspects of overall fitness. Of these various forms of exercise some increase muscle strength while some improve endurance, and still others increase athletic performance. There is one exercise system that incorporates all of these benefits. It has enjoyed a steady increase in popularity since it’s inception. This style of exercise requires minimal or in many cases no equipment. The body is the only “equipment” required for the most part. This exercise system is known as Pilates.

Pilates is named after its founder, Joseph Pilates. Like Joseph Pilates, the Pilates system was born in Germany. Joseph’s goal was to create a form of exercise that would help to connect the mind and body. Early on in his studies and during the creation of Pilates as we know it today he focused on what he called “Contrology.” That name resulted from his belief that the mind controls the body.

Body control comes from a number of principles that Joseph Pilates incorporated in the Pilates system. The first of these principles is concentration. When a person focuses and concentrates on their body’s actions, they are more likely to be able to control them. While working towards control, other principles come into play. Breathing is another important aspect that Pilates utilizes. Proper breathing helps relax and focus the mind–body connection. Other important principles include fluidity and precision of movement. These two principles go hand in hand. Movements in Pilates flow in a fluid–like manner from one position to the next.

These movements must also, according to Pilates principles, be precise. In order for a movement to be precise it must be controlled. Focus, breath, fluidity, control, precision…Pilates!

The principles that are the backbone of Pilates make for a sound exercise program. When performed properly, Pilates proves to be a great exercise system that can help people to attain a healthy mind and body. Of the numerous benefits, increased muscular strength and improved flexibility stand out. The Pilates system is easy on the joints and can even be used at times for rehabilitative purposes. Though all different parts of the body are incorporated, it is especially effective at conditioning the abdominal muscles, the lower back muscles, and the glutes. These muscle groups collectively make up what some people call the core. In the Pilates system the core is referred to as “The Powerhouse.” Whether it’s used for general fitness, athletic performance enhancement, or rehabilitation, Pilates is an effective exercise system that increases strength and flexibility in all parts of the body especially in that of the Powerhouse.
